David I. Jones — A Bristol Channel Crossing Recovered from the Records

A historical Bristol Channel swimming biography · 21 August 1977

The Bristol Channel Swim

On 21 August 1977, David I. Jones completed a Bristol Channel swim recognised in the BLDSA’s annual report. The contemporary table records 13 hours 1 minute and labels the result a men’s record. The later BCSA register identifies his course as Glenthorne to Porthcawl, placing him among the early swimmers of the long North Devon–South Wales route [1, 2].

A later history of the Liffey Swim adds a useful geographical lead. Cyril J. Smyth identifies a David Jones of Port Talbot, describes a Lynmouth-to-Porthcawl crossing and cites an Irish Times report headed “Welshman swims Bristol Channel”, dated 26 August 1977. The matching event and period make this a strong lead for the swimmer’s home area, though the original newspaper article still needs inspection [3].

Discrepancies in the Historical Record

The timing differs by thirty seconds. The BLDSA table reads 13.01.00; the BCSA gives 13.01.30. The contemporary table supports 13 hours 1 minute as the preferred working duration, with the later thirty seconds retained as a discrepancy. An observer’s log or certificate could determine whether the table rounded or omitted seconds [1, 2].

The later history’s Lynmouth departure is also less specific than the BCSA’s Glenthorne route label. Its estimated distance travelled should not be treated as a recovered track. Likewise, its “first Welshman” description is a reported historical distinction requiring comparison with earlier swimmers, not proof that he was the first Welsh person across: women had completed earlier Bristol crossings [2, 3].

Other Swimming Achievements

The same BLDSA recognition list includes David I. Jones among Windermere swimmers in 1976, giving 9 hours 3 minutes. That supplies a further contemporary sporting entry under the same name. Additional race results may enlarge the picture, but no securely matched English Channel or North Channel success has been established in this research [1].

Personal Life

The sporting record expands the inherited initials D. I. Jones to David I. Jones. Port Talbot is supported by Smyth’s referenced historical account, but his middle name, age, occupation, family and later life remain unverified. Those gaps should remain visible rather than be filled with details belonging to another David Jones [1, 3].

Legacy

Jones’s crossing is part of the sustained activity on the longer Bristol route during the 1970s. Recovering the contemporary result restores a fuller name and a dated achievement to that history. It also reveals why the original sources matter: a short recognition table can both strengthen an identification and expose a timing difference hidden by later lists [1, 2].
