Gary Carpenter — A Teenage Record from Penarth to Clevedon

A historical Bristol Channel swimming biography · 26 August 2007

The Bristol Channel Swim

On 26 August 2007, Gary Carpenter swam from Penarth to Clevedon in 5 hours 35 minutes 22 seconds. The BLDSA recognition database records a solo completion and designates it a new men’s record on the 12.7-mile course. The BCSA’s route archive agrees on the date and exact time [1, 2].

Gary was a teenager, associated with Clevedon swimming. His crossing followed Steve Price’s pioneering swims on the same route in the 1990s. Later accounts name Steve as his coach, but the exact preparation, coaching arrangements and support roles still need confirmation from the swimmers or original papers [2, 3].

The recorded time alone cannot tell us Gary’s course through the tidal streams or how the escort chose its route. No original observer report, timed track or full crew list has been inspected for this biography, so sea conditions and moments within the crossing are left open rather than reconstructed [1].

Discrepancies in the Historical Record

Gary’s exact age is disputed. The BCSA says sixteen; later summaries say seventeen. An official ASA result sheet dated 9 August 2008 lists Gary Carpenter of Clevedon at eighteen. That contemporary sporting record is relevant but does not supply a birthday or explain the age convention. “Teenage swimmer” is therefore the defensible wording until his age on the day is confirmed [2–4].

The BLDSA’s record category should also remain attached to the named route and period. It does not establish a universal fastest or youngest Bristol Channel swimmer across all courses. Claims of age priority need a separate historical comparison [1, 2].

Other Swimming Achievements

The ASA’s 2008 Age Group Open Water Championships results place Gary eleventh in the boys’ seventeen-to-twenty-four category at Holme Pierrepont, representing Clevedon. His 2,000-metre time was 34 minutes 1.09 seconds. This is independent evidence of open-water competition near the period of his Bristol swim [4].

The existing dossier also identifies a possible 2005 Western Counties ASA English Channel relay entry through Dover.UK.com. That result was not recoverable from the current page in this pass and remains a lead for the original team record. It should not be turned into a solo English Channel achievement [5].

Personal Life

Gary’s Clevedon connection is supported by the official competition sheet. Beyond that sporting setting, his childhood, occupation, family and later life have not yet been established from reliable evidence. An interview and his own surviving documents would be the strongest way to develop that part of the biography [4].

Legacy

Gary’s recognised 2007 result brought a teenage swimmer into the history of the Penarth–Clevedon course. The formal men’s-record designation provides a clear historical achievement, even while the exact age and operational story remain unresolved. Recovering his certificate, photographs and observer’s account would give that result its fuller setting [1, 2].
