Jeffrey Lloyd — Successive English and Bristol Channel Swims

A historical Bristol Channel swimming biography · 4 August 1979

The Bristol Channel Swim

Jeffrey Lloyd crossed the Bristol Channel on 4 August 1979 in 11 hours 1 minute 30 seconds. The BLDSA’s contemporary individual-swim table records the course as Glenthorne Cove to Coney Beach, Porthcawl, labels it sixteen miles and marks his result a men’s record. This supplies a more precise route description than the later Glenthorne–Porthcawl shorthand [1, 2].

His crossing belonged to the sustained period of long-route swimming that followed Kevin Murphy, Ted Keenan, Jane Luscombe and David I. Jones. Lloyd had already completed an English Channel solo the previous year. The two results establish a sequence of major sea swims rather than a single isolated Bristol entry [1–3].

Discrepancies in the Historical Record

An inherited project entry had transposed the Bristol date into 8 April 1979. The original BLDSA row reads 4.8.79, supporting 4 August directly. That documentary evidence is stronger than an argument based on which season seems more plausible [1].

The recognition table’s men’s-record label is a historical designation on the specified course. It should not become an outright fastest Bristol crossing across all routes or erase Jane Luscombe’s earlier faster result. The original course criteria and observer papers would help explain the record category [1].

A separate discrepancy concerns Lloyd’s English Channel swim. The CSA gives 11 hours 47 minutes; a Pontypridd Observer search excerpt describes a Monday start at Shakespeare Beach at 8.25 a.m. and 11 hours 42 minutes in the water. The official register is followed as the working result, while the five-minute difference awaits the original newspaper image and timing record [3, 4].

Other Swimming Achievements

The CSA records Lloyd under Wales, with a solo England-to-France completion in 1978, timed at 11 hours 47 minutes. Earlier BLDSA race-table entries under Jeffrey Lloyd offer leads to a longer competitive career, but they have not yet been matched sufficiently to support a full personal results list. No North Channel success has been established here, so Original Triple Crown status is not inferred [3].

Personal Life

Lloyd’s Welsh sporting affiliation is explicit in the CSA register. Coverage by a Pontypridd newspaper offers a route into local research, but is not proof of residence there. His age, occupation, family, club and later life remain unverified; similarly named jockeys, riders and other public figures have not been merged with the swimmer [3, 4].

Legacy

Lloyd’s documented 1978 and 1979 successes place him within an important generation of Channel swimmers. His Bristol entry is especially valuable because a contemporary association record preserves not only the date and time but also the named beaches and record category. Recovering the observer’s account would allow the swim’s practical story to be told with the same confidence [1, 3].
